The Delicacy of Time

Brief: To celebrate a chosen craft and then devise a proposition and communicate it in an appropriate and inventive way.

Concept: My idea looked into celebrating the craft of mechanical watchmaking as there is a huge amount of detail that goes into creating a watch-piece and I felt it was a hidden form of art that should be celebrated and commended.

Outcome: The final outcome I designed was a leather-bound book called 'The Delicacy of Time' that looked into the main pieces of a mechanical watch design and then I presented them in a layered style using acetate and foiling to represent the different parts.
I named it 'The Delicacy of Time' due to the amount of delicate details that go into simply telling the time.
To gain more of an insight about how the watch works beneath the face I deconstructed my own watch-piece and took images of it on a macro lens. This gave me more of an idea about how areas connect together but also the colours involved beneath the surface such as the gold, silvers and coppers.
Each acetate layer came with a simple illustration of the piece along with information about what it does for the watch and its significance to the mechanics. I also included footnotes that included further information about when the piece was invented and who the inventor was.

I wanted to show how much history and intricacy goes into the design of the parts to simply have one goal, to tell the time.
I also included some quotes of watchmakers from books and interviews that separated the text and illustrations a bit more. Also to enable more legibility of the text I included a insert that could be used to read the information easier and see each layer individually.
