Taral·larà: Museu de la Música de Barcelona

Taral·larà: Museu de la Música de Barcelona
Master's Degree Project / Elisava

Our Master project consisted in revitalizing the communication of the Museum of Music of Barcelona, an institution dedicated to experimentation and musical reflection and owner of one of the largest collections of instruments in Europe.

The Museum focused on an academic and historical communication, mainly understood by professionals or students of music. That is why we aim to bring communication to a wider audience, and based on it we decided to use a language to represent music at any level: the onomatopoeias.

For this reason, it seemed natural to change the name of the Music Museum to Taral·larà, since it is the onomatopoeia for humming in Catalan, and humming is one of the most immediate ways for anyone to express themselves musically.

From that point, the Museum began to come to life and to manifest itself in different ways: the chosen typography served to represent different types of sounds and provide movement to the identity, the variety of colors increased the ludic vibes of the project, and photography, when it appeared, helped to balance the compositions. These gathered elements allowed us to create coherent, and at the same time diverse, pieces for all areas of the project.

Plantaplam!
Master's Degree Packaging project

To bring the activity of the museum to home, we created an every day object to live this experience with. This object is a plant pot, where the user can put any indoor plant, and at the same time is a sound amplifier for any mobile phone. That’s because plants can grow faster when listening to music! We wanted an onomatopoeic name for the product, but kind of related to the plants, so we finally decided to call it Plantaplam! Always using a catalan - type onomatopoeia to keep the project's coherence.

The main goal of the packaging was to solve how to transport the pot it in a comfy way, as the Plantaplam! is heavy and a plant is a delicate object. Also, we wanted a recycled material whose color could contrast the identity’s colors and not expensive to produce. So we designed a packaging made of cardboard and fabric tapes easy to ensamble.

The cardboard is resistant to hold the pot-amplifier weight and easy to print on, as we had to put a lot of information: the promotion of the museum, how the object works, what is it’s function, etc.

Clap Magazine
Master's Degree Editorial project

Clap is a monographic magazine, where the main topic is music and neighboring themes. So every issue is about a topic that can relate to the music in a direct or indirect way. As the identity of the museum has a permanent reference about catalan culture, and the building is located in Barcelona, the magazine has both international and national content.

The first one talks about music and cinema, and it has some interviews to movies soundtrack authors, film directors, photographic reports about foley effects and instruments viewed from inside, articles about how films are developed following music and so on.

We wanted a cohesive but unique personality for the magazine style, so we continue using the same tipography used in Taral·larà identity, but a more legible one for the articles. Color, photography and illustration are much more richer than in the identity, because of the possibilities given by the magazine's format and content.
