100hello

The 100xhello project is a response to a university brief in which we had to construct a book as we wished, however it had to contain 100 drawings.

After a conversation with a fellow graphic designer I was introduced to google's new revolutionary new font "Noto" in partnership with Monotype that set out to create a typeface that offers a single font style that covers more than 800 languages and over 100 writing scripts.

Being in a international relationship I am constantly translating between Swedish and English, using google translate makes this process incredibly easy, I am able to share thoughts, hold conversation and even help us learn each others native tongue.

You'd be forgiven upon digesting the cover, that this project offers nothing other than 100 hellos, this is true. However thanks to the beauty of language the hellos in this project offer much more.

I began by downloading googles Noto font that formed the base of my project, I extensively researched the 100 most spoken languages and collected the information I needed and found its corresponding script.

Within my book are 100 pieces of acetate demonstrating the variety and confusion of language when its layered up creating a visual metaphor which informed my front cover. I aimed to break this down so it could easily be digested by everyone, I designed a map that allows you to interact with the book so you can learn the location of each language while also getting an understanding of its origin, how many people speak it and what rank it is according to its position in the book.
