Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tart) // Packaging

There is really no way to make Pastel de Nata taste better but the same isn't true about it's packaging design. And that was exactly the challenge.
.................
The history:

Pastel de Nata was created in 1837 by Catholic monks at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Belém, Lisbon). The recipe was sold to the owners of a sugar refinery close to the Mosteiro, that opened the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém. This recipe remains a secret to this day. Only the pastry chefs working at Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém know it and it's their responsibility to keep the secret.

The Pastel de Belém originated the Pastel de Nata which is a version of the latter that you can get all through Portugal at coffe shops and restaurants.

The process:

The aim was to create a modern and sophisticated look but also to keep the tradicional feel.
Having that in mind the pattern below was conceived. Inspired by the typical ceramic tiles of Lisbon and representative of the pastry in a geometric form.

The warm brown and dark yellow tones (associated with the pastry) against the two shades of blue were used to add an elegant gourmet feel to the design.

To complete the luxurious look Zefani Stencil was the chosen typeface.
