Branding boom saloon: typography

the boom room is part of a triple stranded business which also includes boom saloon, the print magazine democratising creativity for good; and boom projects, an ongoing series of community led projects which use creativity to inspire and empower. Conceptualising, branding, editing, designing, producing and publishing boom saloon magazine was the boom room's very first job, and one held consistently close to our hearts. 

The studio had the luxury of time for this project, exploring multiple possibilities before settling on an aesthetic worthy of a publication with such a bold mission. boom saloon showcases the talent of creatives from all backgrounds, all around the world; it was essential we created something knowledgable and intelligent whilst quiet and thoughtful – doing justice to the incredible contributors whose work filled the pages.  

The first step was to hone in on typography, bringing together a family of typefaces which could be combined to create a versatile tone – at once insightful and refined whilst also gripping and engaging. After much exploration we settled upon OrigGarmnd BT for the main typeface, used across boom saloon's logo and main body copy. A classic serif, it was injected with our own special twist thanks to some unusual kerning and a combination of secondary typefaces which continues to evolve as we publish the latest issues of boom saloon
