Herne Hill: Location Specific Design/ Sound Exploration

SOUNDS OF HERNE HILL is a project mapping the sounds of Herne Hill station’s “Play Me I’m Yours” piano and its players.

The sounds of the piano players were recorded and the colours were extracted from their images to develop a colour-to-sound visual system.

I made myself a key to convert the notes into colours that I previously mapped, and length of the colour strips to symbolise the beat counts. After finishing transcribing all the recorded sounds into sheet music, I used colours on the images to translate into notes (bigger colour portion on image= lowest note A), and length of the colour strips the rhythm (shorter strip, shorter beat).
The people (photographed), the colours (mapped), and their music (transcribed & visualised using colour strips).
