We are happy to report for duty once again for Clemens Ascher to composite and retouch his new series "Of Drill and Ceremony".
As part of a large body of personal work that examines different measures of societal control, Clemens Ascher surprised us with yet another brilliant series - this time of staged soldiers in a surreal military bootcamp. The abstract scenes isolate mementos of military life in a fictional regime. Similar to his other projects, Clemens is using strong, graphic elements, and even reintroduces 'The Red Drink', a fictional beverage that ties to the namesake series in which he explores facets of consumerism.
After the photographer captured the soldiers, our London team composited the images from a library of background elements Clemens provided, creating detached structures within an empty desert. We added a sand storm to disguise the vastness of the desert and in some images soldiers almost dissolve into the background, engulfed by the sand.
As Clemens states: "Like always in my works any resemblance to “reality" is entirely coincidental." Or, is it not?? Decide for yourself...
