These massive gun forts were built to defend the British coast against possible invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte. The gun platform housed a 24 pounder canon and 2 18 pounder howitzers. The gunners accommodation and magazines were protected by 2.5 metre-thick walls made from an estimated 700,000 bricks.
