Picture retouching: snow in the city

In Cottbus / Germany I celebrated the 8th consecutive year without snow. This is very frustrating because from my childhood I experienced the snow much more often at Christmas. The image editor in me knows but to help. From a picture of a friend (Thank you, Ingo) and a shot from my archive in 2005, was a Christmas with snow (at least in the head).
The first attempt I made with another method. I generated artificial snow from the red channel of the original image. For this purpose, the red channel was separated, this converted into a mask and filled the mask with white. The result was passable, but seemed a bit artificial.
Only the combination of two pictures brought a natural result. However, the workload was higher. Both images had been exposed with different cameras and different lenses. The resulting parallax differences had to be balanced laboriously.
The 50% blend of the original with the winter version of 2005 shows the bugs. While the background fits quite well near the horizon, in the foreground and in the middle part you can compensate for a lot of parallax shifts.
