The illustration was inspired by the nature of the book itself: the educated poems (represented by the chess pieces) and the impulsive choice of words used (like the drawings style)

Also, "Il bianco cavaliere" means "The white knight" in Italian, and this is why there is a horse with a crown as the main character of the illustration, followes by other pawns (a metaphor of all the soldiers of all ancient societies)
