Eames Cards: Resisting Gender Norms

Eames Cards: Resisting Gender Norms
DELIVERABLES
– Illustration
– Self-promotional Cards

OVERVIEW
Originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames, the Eames cards are a deck of slotted playing cards assembled to build into structures of various sizes depending on the number of cards. The theme of this project is gender identity, of which I decided to focus on LGBT which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

PROBLEM
Based on the topic of gender identity, illustrate a set of six double-sided self-promotional cards based on Eames design.

SOLUTION
Inspired to think of elements that should be gender neutral, I started jotting and sketching ideas to imagine what they could look like. The concept was to create patterns of the tangible elements on one side and create illustrations of the intangible elements on another side. With reference to David Shrigley and Paul Davis' works, I attempted with acrylic painting on illustrations for the first time.

Tangible Elements:
1. Hairstyles have no gender.
2. Make-up have no gender.
3. Clothings (materiality) have no gender.
4. Scents have no gender.
5. Shoes have no gender.
6. Skin types have no gender.

Intangible Elements:
1. Strength (physical and mental) has no gender.
2. Behaviours have no gender.
3. Capability has no gender.
4. Personality has no gender.
5. Vulnerability has no gender.
6. Humanity has no gender.
