Shard // Recycling Bin Station

Shard was a Two week project aimed at testing our ability to design a fully functional product in the time allocated and enhancing team work under such cicumstances.
In our preliminary research on bins we noticed that the majority of designs didn't lend themselves to the surroudings. So we wanted to design something that would blend in but also capture attention. We did this by mimicing surrounding angle and shape designs. This is just one example of Shard in an enviornment.
Shard can be a single bin or attached as a group, its versitile shape allows many different configurations to be made. We have designed a declining slope at the top as a place to pour waste liquid when disposing of bottles or cans alike. Inside Shard there is enough space for a fully filled 70L bag.
We designed Shard with optimal User Experience in mind. There are Five different variations of bin, each with clear and colourful graphics detailing what item goes in what bin. The manufacturing of Shard was extremely simple and could be cut from a single piece of sheet aluminium, then pressed to created the facet shape. Easily assembled and easily cleaned.
This is one of the sketch models made from thin card and overlayed with colour. This gave us a good idea of the finishing touches that needed to be made.
Shard to scale with an average 6ft male. Fully finished sketch models ( we left out the graphic work on the small models as you could hardly see them )

Clean cut and well made sketch models from early in the project. This is where we decided to really go with the facet design.
Many many foam sketch models were made and sanded to come to our finalised design. There was a multitude of different shapes/designs that we wanted to explore but we finally decided on the best.
