For my design and social change course, I chose to elaborately construct a 5''x 5'' book showcasing the history of the gay rights movement through the scope of photography, graphic design, and popular culture.
I decided to use the colors of the rainbow to guide the reader through the pages which can be seen in the table of contents. The introduction section, highlighted in red, describes the sequence of events that is needed to qualify as a social movement. I also look to FDR's four freedoms as a way to zone in on the equalities that the gay movement itself is focusing to achieve. I then show the how these freedoms are being violated in the LGBTQ community.
The book itself is still in process, however, I have established a system of using color blocking to introduce the new sections of the book. I also use full black and white photo spread to indicate the ending of a section. The circle is a common theme throughout the book which is used to set a scope on the people in the LGBTQ community that is impacted by the movement. I create each individual spread, edit the imagery, and write the copy myself.

My goal for this project is to teach people within the LGBTQ community about the movements past, present, and potential future. I also believe this book can be used to enlighten people to become more empathetic towards people different from themselves.
