Prefabricated Library

This was a competition for a new library in a rural Middle School. Most of the buildings in the vicinity of the school had a clear pattern of being north-south facing for maximum energy efficiency, and with most buildings having pitched roofs. Part of requirement for a new building was it’s buildability, use of simple construction methods so that building erection could be completed by regular people with minimum training. We chose the use of structurally insulated panels as a primary structure, keeping the north south orientation, with larger openings in the south but with shades so that the summer sun would not generate too much heat and light indoor. The inside of the building was all timber panels while the outside was lined with metal sheets to protect from weather and make an aesthetic statement.
