Final Project: Artist Book
The Message:Macro and Micro. page-through of mixed media artist book. 4" by 6". 2018.
Utilizing different 2D digital tools, I created this accordion style book. Processing, Illustrator, and Photoshop were the main softwares used to create it.

The idea behind for the book was the story of the podcast "The Message". The layout was designed to follow the narrative. As the story carries on, the book carries you through it, alternating between macro and micro elements in the story. The macro is what was occurring in the world around the characters, and the micro is what was occurring within the bodies of the infected.

The cover was chosen because it gives a feel of the over all flow of the podcast. The suspense, the uneasiness, and the progression are all represented.
Assignment 4: Texture Transitions
Physical Prints
inkjet prints composited from scanned textures in PhotoShop. 12" x 6" each. 2018.
Digital Images
Corrupted. PhotoShop composition including scanned plastic, sweater, and a picture of a flower. 2018.
Decay. PhotoShop composition including scanned plastic, cantaloupe, and carpet. 2018.
This assignment was created in photoshop. The idea was to take everyday objects and try to create a visual for an infected mind and body. This was inspired by the podcast "The Message".

The primarily pink, top image, was a photo of a flower. The flower reminded me of a brain if it were to be viewed from the inside. The tube like pedals reminded me of the folds in the human brain. The thought behind this image was that if you could peak inside of the infected mind of one of the patients in the podcast, this is what would it look like. I used a scanned image of plastic to create the black inside the petals. I distorted the color and hue of the plastic to give it the black coloring. I then added a small portion of a scanned sweater to add some further diversity and texture to the black. The result is an organic looking image that has been corrupted by this invasive black.

The lower image was what I thought depleting life could look like. The top yellow is a scanned cantaloupe. With a little change of the color, I thought this looked like flesh. As it rips and wares away, it reveals this dark red stitching. This is a scanned piece of carpet. Again, the color was changed to looked like muscle fibers underneath the skin. I used a scanned piece of crumpled plastic to further distort the carpet by placing it in a layer above it, but utilizing the opacity tools to make it even more transparent.

There are some distinct differences between the digital images and the physical prints. The colors of the top image faded slightly when physically printed, but it creates a more organic feeling. The pink isn't as vibrant, but more natural. The lower image's colors neutralized as well. This caused the plastic to show up less in the print and bring the carpet texture more to the surface.
Assignment 3: Tiled Composition
The Spread. tiled pattern created in Illustrator. 2018.
Using Illustrator, I created a composition to embody the idea of contagion. The black hexagon slowly releases smaller hexagons to infect the surrounding hexagons. These surrounding hexagons then pass the smaller hexagons on to their neighboring hexagons. As the smaller hexagons are passed along, they leave the hexagons grey and 'infected'. One of the constraints of the project was to only use 3 values. I worked within these limits to creates a feeling of spreading and infecting.
Assignment 2: Loop Pattern
Sickly Rhythmic. Loop Pattern Generated in Processing. 2018.
Using the Processing program and a basic knowledge of code, I was able to create this design. The idea is to show progression, uneasiness, and slight uncertainty. I utilized color, design, code, and shape to try to create that feeling.
Assignment 1: Coded Rhythm
Heart. screen grab of composition coded in Processing. 2018

Through basic code, and the utilization of the Processing computer program, I was able to create a piece of digital art. This screen grab shows two important pieces to this work. On the left, the piece can be seen. On the right, a section of the coding is shown. The inspiration was drawn from the heart beat heard in the podcast, "The Message". The white bars indicate the heart beat. The green is representative of the ominous uncertainty of the podcast. The bars get closer together as they go to the right to give a sense of anxiety and uneasiness.
