Digital Design Lab Project One: Surface Design

The assignment for this project was to create a letter form and pattern from a word that had an emotional connection to me. The word I ended up going with was Gamer. I've been playing video games since I was around 3 years old, when I would sneak over to the controller while my mother was up to do something and mess with her game. So this word represents a very key foundation for who I am as a person today.

For my pattern I created it by relating everything back to the four elements of fire, water, earth and air. Saving crystals or objects that represent these four elements area common trope in JRPGs. In the middle are physical manifestations of the elements in the form of sprites. Then I have weapons to represent the hero characters, a sword and shield, a bow, a staff and an axe. Finally I have four monsters that are corruptions of each element.
My word for the project was Gamer. Since there are so many genre's of games and gamers I decided to focus it down specifically to JRPGs. I drew inspiration from the Square Enix, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Mana, Kingdom Hearts, and other JRPG logos when deciding on how to style my word.
For my Gif I tried to replicate the old sort of fade in you would see on video game logos like Sega or Final Fantasy
For my products and my product board I decided not to include any personal clothing as I feel that market is already well saturated. Instead I decided to go with products I felt gamers like myself would enjoy using to decorate their homes such as throw pillows and clocks, as well as some laptop decorates like cases and stickers.
My process book explains more in depth about how I came up with some of the rules I used when designing my letter form and pattern, as well as showing some of the things that inspired me and includes my original word I was going to go with and why that didn't work out. It also has a bit of sassy humor for entertainment value. You can read it below or go to:
