About the Project
This project is about an exploration between people and place in achieving place identity. Using the approach of Genius Loci, this project aims to rejuvinate the spirit of a chosen site, Petempatan Melayu Sembawang Mosque, which has a unique atmosphere and rich of historical, social and spiritual value. The location which is surrounded by nature and serenity give a special feeling and value to the space, which also gives an identity to the space. In fact, the existing mosque cannot just be seen as a cultural artefact but rather develop it to embrace its spirit.
By keeping the mosque and introducing Spiritual Retreat as a new program, this project will be targetting all muslims in Singapore, especially for the young generation to experience the atmosphere and spirit of the place By creating and intimate relationship between the user and the place, this project aims to unfold the place identity and protect the spirit of the place
