Worlds of El Lissitzky

avant-garde festival

In trying to commemorate El Lissitzky’s spirit & body of work, it is his future-oriented, procedural approach that defines his legacy. His work is undoubtedly avant-gardist : today is obsolete, only tomorrow is relevant.
Taking these ideas into account, the notion of architecture as a social process & city-wide catalyst begins to take shape. The avant-garde festival is a prime example of how such a radical & city-altering programme can be deployed with maximum impact and minimum effort.
a framework for the future

The festival runs on a yearly cycle, as seen in the diagram. While the main attraction for tourists and residents alike is the month-long festival, the impact & importance of the months leading up to it & months following are not to be neglected :

1 Serve novel ideas to the inhabitants of Novosibirsk.
2 Archive the ephemeral body of avant-garde works.

"Architecture makes a new history ; History doesn’t make a new architecture.”
Reiser + Umemoto

“Everything that is significant in Novosibirsk is beholden to the ideology of novelty.”
