Yokohama Terminal project

YOKOHAMA INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL

My project for today assignment is Yokohama International Passenger Terminal. Yokohama Terminal, designed by Foreign Office Architects (FOA) in Osanbashi pier, 1995 and completed in 2002, is a product born from ‘inventive architectural methodology and socially conscious thinking’ (Langdon, D. 2014). According to Ivan Shumkov, the design of Yokohama Terminal, unlike other project such as the work of Frank Gehry in terms of sculptural forms, is based on topography and programmatic and typological generation of the form (BUILD ACADEMY 2014). The project was designed with three different surfaces: The ground plane surface; the intermediate surface and finally the top surface. The Ground floor is a parking garage, the intermediate surface is the terminal’s operating areas, including ticketing, shopping and waiting areas. The steel beams are the skeleton of Yokohama terminal, it spans over the ceiling and add a weighty feeling to the space that contrasts with the feel of the observation deck, in which was made with a sensation of light and flexible.

In my model, I based it on Antonino Saggio’s video (2010), which is “Yokohama Terminal, Foreign Office Architects”. This video is created by Liborio Sforza, in which is a collection of several materials available on the net about the terminal. The material I used are balsa woods and white cardboard. The balsa wood is used as the foundation of the model, including the supports and the central core. I used white cardboards to create the 2 ‘wings’ for the model and steel beams because it is a flexible and strong material, easy to cut too in my opinion. I decided not to connect the top surface to the main building because the model is just a cut out part of the real structure to show the bones of the terminal. Therefore, it does not need to be connected.
