Expressive Dialogue Poster

Typography Project
A class project with the objective to use only type to express emotion.
CASE STUDY
Movie: White Chicks
Goal: My goal was to define at least two different moods between the characters of the dialogue and translate the mood with two different types.
Characters: Kevin & Lisa
Kevin's tone: Calm, enthusiastic, nervous
Lisa's tone: AngryDramatic

Dialogue:
Kevin: "Now that looks totally cute!"
Lisa: "Oh my god are you kidding?! Hi I'm Carney Wilson before my gastric bypass surgery!"
Lisa: "SOMEBODY THROW SHAMU BACK IN THE OCEAN!"
Kevin: "ok ok let me get you something else...."
For Kevin's tone, I decided to go with a serif type. You'll notice he only has two short lines. If you haven't seen the movie, Kevin reacts to Lisa's dramatic moment of her skirt not fitting in a nervous way. I wanted to portray that emotion by decreasing the font-size and have the letter e in "else" dangle at the bottom of the page.

For Lisa's tone, I chose to go with a sans-serif type. To express her emotion, I chose a very large font-size and rearranged the characters in a way that looks as if she is yelling through the poster.
Colors: Red, Yellow, Black and Blue
Red expresses anger.
Yellow expresses optimism and energy.
Black for more contrast.
Blue to represent ocean.
