Hand cut & printed menus for Leadbelly’s Bar & Kitchen

Spring  2019
Late night contemporary dining
Brought to you by the team behind The Mayflower Pub

Leadbelly’s is their latest venture, bringing  late night contemporary dining to Canada Water. Focusing on a love of music, great interior design, and fresh seasonal produce, Leadbelly's approached us with a clear brief. To develop a new range of menus to better represent their space’s unique design.
Contemporary British dinning
First things first

We visited Leadbelly’s Canada Water to get an understanding of the brand, what it feels like, what it stands for and most importantly, who is it for. The team took photographs, sketches and rubbings of the various colours, patterns and textures present in the bar and restaurant. This data was collated and presented to the client as three distinct design directions.
Hand cut & printed
Block printing

The chosen design direction references the myriad of plants adorning the space. Featured plants influenced a series of hand cut and printed floral patterns. These patterns guided the subsequent design of the menus themselves.
Brunch Menu
Relaxed simplicity

Breakfast? Everyone knows Brunch is the most important meal of the day. Designed to be friendly and welcoming, the new Leadbellys Brunch menu combines the brands distinctive blocky simplicity, with the restaurants quirky and unique interior aesthetic. Clever use of the brands blocky style guides the viewer to specific dishes as well as potential up-selling opportunities for additional menu items such as juices and smoothies and the add-on items.

The design uses a cool dark turquoise; inspired by the dominant wall colour in the bar as well as the featured plants, to further link the  physical and printed brand elements.  The back of the menu features a hand cut block print of a calathea plant, with its large distinctive leaves it creates a striking and eye-catching print that draws the view in.

The turquoise highlight colour further reinforces the link to the luscious surrounding that guests find themselves in when they visit Leadbelly's.
Sunday Menu
Informal happiness

Happy Sunday to me! Leadbellys block brand aesthetic makes a reappearance to highlight the Sunday Menus main attraction, Leadbelly's delicious Sunday Roasts. The menu is heavily influenced by the Brunch Menu upon which it is based but uses a combination of yellow highlight colour and alternative cover print to differentiate the two menus.

A vibrant Mustard Yellow, inspired by the eclectic welcome wall that guides guests from the bar into the restaurant, the new Leadbellys Sunday menu was designed to be both playful and refined. The back of the menu features a single repeating Calathea leaf.

A bright, happy highlight of Mustard Yellow helps to set the mood for an enjoyable and relaxed Sunday lunch.
Evening Menu
Refined playfulness

Good evening. Designed to be familiar yet more refined, the new Leadbelly's Evening menu uses a more reserved aesthetic for a more sophisticated and unique evening dinning experience. Using a vibrant hot pink; found in Leadbelly's Instagram famous neon wall, helps to further emphasise the menus intended audience.

A single Calathea leaf adorns the back of the menu in place of the usual full bleed print, highlighting the more formal nature of the menu.

The blocky brand elements seen in the other menus do not make an appearance, in favour of a feature pattern around the border of the menu.
Drinks Menu
Bold statements

You haven’t seen a drinks list until you’ve been to Leadbellys. Designed to stand out from the crowd whilst blending in with the rest of the menu family, the new Leadbellys Drinks menu takes pride of place on every table. Bold and eye-catching whilst at the same time friendly and refined. The menu incorporates some of the best bits from the rest of the menu family whilst also displaying bespoke and unique artwork and assets such as the one-off Fish Bone Fern print adorning the front cover.

The drinks menu  pays homage to the Instagram famous neon sign seen on the feature wall in the restaurant. Being freestanding, the rear cover is just as important as the front. Here the various promotions Leasbellys offer are displayed in five individual lockups, each one tailored to the offer.

In total the drinks menu is 20 pages long, below is a select few to show the variety and range of assets we created for the menu.
