The Meteora, Greece

The Meteora
The Monastery of Rousanou, b.1560
The Rousanou monastery stands alone above the humid valley  on a small pinnacle in the Meteora Valley. The unique landscape is located in the foothills of the Pindus Mountain range in Northern Greece. The monastery was built in 1560 and still is the sanctuary for 13 nuns.  The nuns here,  just as in the 24 monasteries of the region, follow the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Rousanou and the Holy Monastery of St. Steven are the only monasteries inhabited by nuns, where the others are inhabited by monks.
The Monastery of St. Stephen, b.1545
The population of the monasteries is 56, with 15 monks and 41 nuns. The monasteries now sustain themselves on tourism due to combination of the natural beauty of the area married with the Athonite Architecture.
The Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, b.1527
This is the first piece of artwork from my bike tour across mainland Europe in the Summer of 2018 where I cycled from Athens to my home in the U.K covering 4000km & crossing 9 countries. I will be publishing more work from my tour where I will be highlighting the most beautiful places and also other places I’ve experienced.
