Words of the Liturgy

"Words of the Liturgy" For this series of calligraphy, I was initially inspired by words that mark major moments in the Divine Liturgy of the Orthodox Church. Words that, when heard in piety and attentiveness, send a little shiver down one's spine and put a smile in their heart. Other words here are "liturgical" but not from the Liturgy. Some are more dogmatic; cathartic in summarizing a piece of understanding but not meant contain the uncontainable. Other words are part of frequent calls and responses, quintessential of many Orthodox traditions and the struggle as humans to remain sincere and engaged no matter how many times you've done something.
"λόγος" - Word.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning."
- John 1:1-2
"Ευλογητός ο Θεός ημών" - "Blessed is our God"

The words that begin most Orthodox services (St. Chrysostom's Liturgy; "Blessed is the Kingdom") When said, these words almost magically transform a space. Everything prior is now paused for a time, and instead an invitation extended to all present to let go of the things that trouble them and to be inward, repentant, and thankful.
"Κύριε, ἐλέησον" - "Lord Have Mercy"

Said throughout services, usually in response to each of a sequence of petitions said by the Priest.
"Αλληλούια" - "Alleluia"
"Σοφία. Ὀρθοί" - "Wisdom, Aright"

Said when the Priest processes the gospel around the church and comes to a halt inthe center. There's always a stillness in the air, a slight cut with the words as if to say "pay attention", followed by a beautiful, drawn out chant. In my experience, this is one time where everyone joins in chanting and there's something special about that moment unity & preparation.
"Ανάστασις" - "Resurrection"
"Εἰρήνη Πᾶσι" - "Peace be with you all"
"ὁ Ἅγιος" - "Holy; Saint"
"ευχαριστία" - "Eucharist (Communion); direct translation: 'thanksgiving' "
"Ἀμήν" - "Amen"
Thanks for your time.
