A Kiwi Layer
A Kiwi layer is a collective series of photographs representing both Indian and Kiwi/ Maori culture. This book highlights the most recognizable symbols of both cultures, explaining their meaning as well as their significance. The clothing in the photographs was designed with aspects of the traditional culture in mind. This book is a reflection of an Indian Migrator to New Zealand and learning about the host country’s history, culture, traditions and adopting a new atmosphere.
This photobook unites two cultures together. Researching and using my personal experiences and understanding of Maori culture as an Indian immigrant student.
Using Maori element like birds feather, piupiu, koru etc. combine with Indian elements bindi and Indian flag colours to create beautiful draped (like saree) garments on Maori model.
By uniting element from both culture is my way of embracing new culture while still keeping true to my roots.
