Chinese ink is used as it is a medium in which was I found common in the three books, which is the idea of nature.  The splashes of the water are uncontrollable and hence is similar to nature.

The first book concept (The Outrun) was based on the idea of an alcohol spill which was mentioned in the book indicating the protagonist’s start of the journey and her discovery of true nature. A bird is also mentioned in the book and is  a visual representation of freedom.

The second book concept ( H is for Hawk) utilizes a harsher and darket splashes to depic the idea of harshness and wilderness. The finger prints also represents the idea of identity as the protagonist of the book finds thier identity through reflecting to her goshawk. Hence the illustration of a goshawk beak is also used for that purpose.

The last book concept was based on using the Chinese ink splashes lightly to convey the idea of senses as the protagonist activates his senses to view the world on a different perspective.
