Making a Vector Graphic Watch

The Sketch:
I found the sketching to be hard. There are only so many ways one can draw a watch that you know you want to do. There are only so many different ways to show the shadow, the face, the knob, etc.

 The Beginning:
To start I decided to start with the most obvious part of the watch. I started with the face. I wanted to get the highlights and shadows just right on the metal with all the dimensions to it as well. That took me the longest trying to figure out exactly how I wanted to do it. But once I got it the rest came easier to me.

The Details:
Next came the details of the face. I knew that the metal on the numbers was very simple and I wanted to keep it that way. I put slight shadows and stayed true to the tones of each number being different from the lighting. I then made the hands, which was more complicated than I thought it would be. After I made the hands just right with the right highlights from the light source I went on to the name. The name was the easiest part of all. I found a font that matched and then I messed with the kerning and height to make it look just right.

The Attachments:
After the face I needed to add the part of the watch that connects the metal to the leather band so I created those with gradients and added highlights and shadows so it looked like the image. I then designed the knob that attaches to the side of the watch. I had to make the highlight just right and make the notches in the knob look realistic. I did that with a gradient.

The Band:
Lastly I made the band. Getting the texture just right was very difficult. I had to make a mask with the texture and with that I adjust the transparency and messed with the styles. Eventually I got it to look very close to the original and then I just added a few more highlights and darkened parts so the texture wouldn’t look flat on the image.

The Comparison / Conclusion:
The vector watch I created is on the left and the image I designed my watch after is on the right. Overall this has taught me to have a sharp eye on my designs and pay attention to detail in ways I wouldn’t have thought otherwise. This assignment has help me grow as a designer and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next project.
