Project 1
Building Awareness
After interviewing my classmate, one story in particular stood out: the story of his first time learning to swim. His parents took him to the local swimming pool and, instead of telling him to be very careful and stay in the shallow end, his mother told him “Jump in. You’ll be fine.” This quote stuck out to me because it shows that simply encouraging someone to try a new experience can help them learn even without a teacher.

I wanted to portray this idea in the booklet. as you turn the pages, the color gets darker until you come to the middle spread, which is entirely black. Then it gets light again and looks like sky to show that even though things might be tough and seem hopeless, if you just dive in you’ll eventually make it through.
Project 2
Discovering the Relationship Between Design and Human Experience
For this project i was inspired to work outside of the digital medium. an important aspect of my calling intention (above) is the act of showing up. To show up means to be present in your own life and the lives of others. In order to do this one must create connections with people. i chose to use embroidery floss as a way of connecting with history, since embroidery as a medium has existed for a long time. I also show connections more literally in the way that the various strings meet at specific contact points and branch apart. each string is a life and the places they meet symbolize two (or more) lives coming in contact, which is a vital aspect of my calling intention.

I really enjoyed working with the floss and pins despite some of the challenges I faced, and i think that the overall design is quite successful. One of the most challenging aspects was dealing with the digital text in relation to “show up”, which is created out of the embroidery floss.
Project 3
Leveraging Your Callings into Organizational Intentions
For this project we were tasked with coming up with an idea for a company that relates to water. The groups were decided based on which people had similar calling intentions. Our group was focused on human connection, so we created a company whose goal was to promote awareness about the lack of clean water in many parts of the world and encourage those of us who take water for granted to get involved and help impoverished communities get access to clean water.

Overall I believe our branding is quite successful. the colors show a clear connection to water and we create contrast while maintaining a professional look. Our brandmark in particular is very successful because its sense of dimensionality makes it stand apart from other logos. This project required a different method of working because i was collaborating with three other people, each with her own style. We had to be in constant communication about the state of our pieces as well as provide lots of feedback to one another. It was sometimes difficult to find a way to meld my personal preferences with what others in the group wanted, but i think that we were able to communicate well and share our ideas to create a successful project.
Project 4
Process Notebook
This notebook showcases the process through which I created each of the projects for this class (shown above). I decided to keep it very simple as far as graphics and imagery so that the sketches and final designs would stand out. Each section uses 2 colors, which are based on the colors used in the final design.
