Antibiotics vs. Bacteria

“Antibiotics vs. Bacteria: Fighting the Resistance” is part of a series of explainer animations we are creating at MedlinePlus, a product of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), to improve outreach with the general public.

We work closely with NIH scientists to create the videos. Public health messages and education are balanced with plain language and engaging visuals. The video is also made with accessibility in mind: it is closed captioned, and the script was carefully written so that the narration meets audio description requirements.

We hope that the shareable videos will help people discover NLM and all the trusted, free products and services it provides. With the above video, we were able to demonstrate a significant improvement in outreach on the MedlinePlus Facebook page. During the month it was released, our video helped boost MedlinePlus’s Facebook reach by over 2,800% and increase post engagements by over 750%. The video received the most social actions out of any posts that MedlinePlus had ever shared. Additionally, we have since been contacted by other government agencies to use the video for public service announcements.

We are excited by the prospect of video sharing to deliver important health messages and to familiarize MedlinePlus to audiences new to NLM. We plan to produce more videos, experimenting with different topics, video lengths, and translations to Spanish. Hopefully as people see more multimedia from MedlinePlus, they will come to trust and look for more NLM content online.
