Babele (Romanian folklore characters)

Babele are characters from Romanian folklore. They were considered to be wise women, initiated, specialists in the field of divine practices. There is also a toponymy of Babe, ancestors and mythical midwives, considered a kind of meteorological deities, active at the beginning of spring.

According to romanian tradition, the first nine days of March are considered babe. Every woman chooses one of them to find out how her soul and luck will be the that year. Bright sunny days are bringing happiness, luck and richness, while cold weather, rain and snow, means tears, troubles, poverty, and misfortunes.
