Voices: My Creative Journey

Voices: Importance of Feedback
Introduction: This project is me sharing my stories and the importance of feedback during my experiences. My plan is to help encourage artists that are just starting out and are afraid to show their work to others. Feedback is important and it helps us learn so we can become better at what we are doing.
Materials Used: Apple Mac, Ipad, Microsoft Word, Adobe Sketch, Spark Video, Google Images
Creative Process:
WHO is your audience? Artists that are starting out
WHAT is the purpose of your story? To share my personal story and to inform artists about the importance of feedback
WHY is the story or its subject important to you? My creative journey helped me get better at art
WHAT do you want your audience to THINK, FEEL or DO after hearing your story? Feel more comfortable about their own art
WHAT is the HOOK? My brief description of my story in the beginning paragraph
WHERE are the DRAMATIC ELEMENTS in your story? Within the paragraphs
HOW will you tell your story? Through illustrations and pictures
WHAT is the TONE?  Casual, narrative,
WHAT is the MOOD? Calm

PAST:
Who/What were your earliest creative influences and why were they so important to you? Doodles on line paper in elementary school
What was your earliest memory of a creative accomplishment that you were proud of? Completing my first picture in art class after school
Who/What stood in the way of your creativity and how did you prevail against them/it? To start drawing and to start making art
What was your area of interest and why? Fine arts, wanted to be better at colour pencils
Which experiences, interests or knowledge from your earlier life prepared you for pursuit of your current area of interest? Always enjoyed art, inspired by graphical games
Which singular event in your past most affected your decision to pursue your area of interest? Realized automotive is not what I wanted to do
Who influenced or assisted you in pursuing your career ambitions, interests, or skill in this area? A lead designer for Psyonix

PRESENT:
How have your interests affected your life as a whole (family, friends, where you live)? My parents were uncertain and scared what my future holds
How would you sum up your creative, artistic or design philosophy (ie. what is the role of creativity in your own life and in the life of humanity in general?)? Realism, fantasy, sci-fi
How does your creative work speak to or represent your personal creative, artistic or design philosophy? I try to create realistic art work mainly by using shadows and proper proportions
How has your time at school challenged you creatively? I try to become more creative and make the projects relative to game
Share a time when you enjoyed an epic win in an assignment at school and explain its importance. Semester 1 Foundation: Form & Space project 1 with line looked amazing and I am really happy about it. My strong points are in value.
Share a time when you had an epic fail in an assignment at school and share what you learned from that experience. The costume party for art studio. I have no idea how to do it well.
Share a piece of work that you are exceedingly proud of and explain why you are so proud of it. In this program I am extremely proud in the first project from Form & Space class. The values were very intense and the whole picture was very eye pleasing
What has been the biggest highlight in the current pursuit of your interests? Meeting all these artists people at George Brown. We all help each other to  become better at what we do

FUTURE:
Where do you see yourself five years from now? I see myself in a workplace of a big gaming company creating artwork for the games
What are your next steps after finishing the foundation program? Either to continue schooling or freelancing and self study
What is the  important lesson have you learned as a student so far this year? Good art requires passion no matter the style
What advice would you give to someone considering entering a program aimed at a career in a creative field? Work hard, work diligently, don't be afraid of feedback and have passion for what you are doing
If you could make a wish come true, what would it be? Become a great concept artist
I started this project off by creating a script. I decided to get an idea of how my video would go and what pictures I would add in. I highlighted the keywords that I would base my pictures on.
Script for video

Introduction – Hi, my name is Edwin and today I will be telling you about my creative journey.  This is my story from my earliest artistic experiences, to how I learned my own art style and philosophy. This is a story of discovery, fear, amazement, inspiration and acceptance. And this is how it began…

Past – My early artistic experiences were just as simple as doodling on a piece of paper. I had a lot of lined paper and I would draw or doodle on them during class or in between classes. However, I was shy with showing my work. Most of my drawings or doodles that I do, I didn’t feel comfortable with sharing so I usually hid them away. Looking back at this, I don’t feel like I have improved back then. My drawings were full of flaws, because there was no criticism on my art to improve it since I was afraid of the feedback.

I didn’t know much about art or its elements and principles so I would draw what I think things look, such as a 2 dimensional house with a big door, wrongly proportioned windows and a sun that would burn every living thing in the picture. Of course, I would feel like I can add more things, so I would usually add a tree as big as a house to fill in some of the space.

When I was in Grade 4, I came across illusionary pictures and I got hooked into them. There were pictures like the young woman and the old woman or the duck and the rabbit. My teachers told me to try to scribble and look at different angles to see different pictures. I would scribble something like this, then I would try to find different objects or pictures in it. For example, this scribble from this angle might look like this weird plane. Illusionary art became a big drive in my young art days, which will also spark my interest in perspective art.

In grade 5 I started after school art at RT Studio. My teacher there – Ronald – taught me to draw what you see. It was here in this art class, where my art started to become better, more realistic and where I learned some elements and principles while I wasn’t even aware. Here I can proudly say I created my very first art piece that I love and like. This caterpie that I drew marked my first steps into art, and the possibilities of what art can do.  This art class will help me create my art style and refine my artistic talents to the present day.

Present – Now drawing for a couple of years, I am starting to come out of my shell and start to be open with my artworks. I am starting to show what I draw to people and I take in their feedbacks and try to make it better, more interesting, more creative. It does take a lot of courage to openly share your work and prepare for the harsh feedback of what the critics may give back at you. I realize the importance now to share your work. You can only get better by taking in other people’s feedback while following on your own creative or artistic or design philosophy.

George Brown’s foundation course is really challenging me. I feel as if all the projects in the courses are aimed toward graphic design and I am sort of forcing those projects to aim more toward gaming. This challenges my creativity extremely and I think it is helping me to become more creative and artistic.

Future – My goal is to become a concept artist for games. I believe that concept artists are the greatest types of artists. They have to create art from thin air, quickly, detailed and accurate. The amount of detail and accuracy inspires me to become better at art, to make it more realistic. I am striving to improve my art and I want to mold my art style into a realism sort where I can proudly look back and say “I did that and this looks amazing”.
After I finished with the script I went on to record myself on Adobe Video. I found this a little hard as the recording would sometimes get some wind sounds that are really loud. I went to re-record a couple of slides until I was satisfied with how the recording sounded like
Once I finished recording I used Adobe Sketch to draw out some of the images and found the rest on Google Images. After that I just cropped, resized and placed them into the video.
Conclusion: I really dislike recording myself since the struggles of recording are so frustrating. This experience was just as frustrating as when I tried a couple years ago. The most challenging part in this project was putting all of this on Behance since my files were everywhere and I am trying to use the iPad to upload everything. Overall this was a very stressful and frustrating project.
