Internships Offered by the Midwest Innocence Project

Attorney Craig O'Dear, a former three-year Patrick Wilson Scholar at Vanderbilt University Law School, serves as a partner at Bryan Cave LLP in Kansas, City, Missouri. In this role, he specializes in commercial litigation and liability cases. Outside of his work at Bryan Cave, Craig O'Dear applies his legal expertise as an advisory board member for the Midwest Innocence Project.

A branch of the national Innocence Project, the Kansas City-based Midwest Innocence Project seeks to exonerate wrongly convicted individuals through investigation and litigation work. Founded in 2001, the project operates with the support of partnerships with the Nebraska Innocence Project, the Innocence Project of Iowa, and the Iowa Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Division.

Augmenting its legal work, the project also offers volunteer opportunities and internship programs for interested individuals. Interns, who are selected as a result of a competitive application process, work full time and have access to skilled mentors at the Midwest Innocence Project. In addition to a law student internship, in which students assist in all areas of various legal cases, the organization offers paralegal and communication internships. While paralegals complete administrative activities such as research and review of case materials, communication interns draft media content and maintain social media pages.
