Adventure motorcycling is a pastime without a clear definition as it means different things to each individual. For some it means biking outside of the city, and for others it means taking off on an epic road trip. No matter how one defines adventure motorcycling, there are a few things all motorcyclists should keep in mind before leaving on their adventures:

1) No need to buy a fancy motorcycle or unnecessary gear. Basically any motorcycle in good condition will enable the motorcyclist to complete a successful adventure trip. In terms of gear, a sturdy knapsack or two is really all one needs to get going.

2) Don’t endlessly prepare. It’s good to be prepared for a trip, but don’t let preparations distract from the important part of the journey: getting on the road. Experts recommend packing a first aid kit and making sure the bike is in good condition, but otherwise motorcyclists should be prepared to improvise.

3) Skip the itinerary. It is tempting to know each step of a trip, but adventure motorcycling is about seeing where the road goes, and an itinerary detracts from spontaneity.
