Kurt Schwitters Monogram

Kurt Schwitters, an artist working during the 1920s and 30s, was an influential figure in art and design particularly within the Dada movement. Although Schwitters' most notable contribution to the landscape of design is his magazine Merz, in designing a custom monogram for him, I chose instead to focus on the collaged, painterly portraits in which he was prolific. Although Merz was highly influential, I wanted to show how Schwitters' depth and range as an artist extended beyond the publication. Recalling these collaged works, I made a monogram emblematic of the tactile cut paper pieces, showing the playful, pictorial side of his body of work while still paying homage to aspects of Merz
