Project Five: Abstraction (Representational)

For our final project, we were to make contour line drawings of a plant/animal of our choice. After displaying in an abstract form, we were to choose a word and texture that could best convey the animal/plant. This project was a good lesson in branding something that isn't quite so obvious.
Concept Sketches/Contour Drawing:
I chose an elephant as my animal to represent. Starting with the four sketches, I liked the profile view the best. After putting in illustrator, I added more wrinkly details in the edges of the ear, and curled the trunk more while adding more detail to the end. It wanted to detail the "fingers" of the elephants trunk for that's a reason elephants are so strong. They can pick up tree's with the ends of their trunks. Strength was an element I deemed important to represent on this creature.
Textures and Color:
As I started exploring different textures, I started with elephant skin. Elephant's skin is old, wrinkly, and sturdy. Elephant's skin can very much represent its character. Upon further searching, I found more crackly looking textures which I felt like didn't represent the strong, sturdy characteristics I was trying to convey. I started searching strong and sturdy textures. I looked up rope, brick and then finally stone. I liked the last texture the best. Because elephants have such a strong connection to the earth, I chose an earth tone color scheme.
Text/Font:
Elephants have a calm, steady and decisive presence, I thought the word stoic would represent an elephants personality well. I chose the font as bodoni, because I thought it displayed a stoic philosophic style.
