Avenir Next Type Specimen Book (Future World EPCOT)

This book features a brief description of the designer of the Avenir Next typeface, Adrian Frutiger; a specimen that displays the various uses and styles of Avenir Next; and a closer look at the anatomy of the typeface. The theme focuses on EPCOT Center and more specifically the Future World portion of the park. Adrian Frutiger wanted to humanize the future through Avenir Next and Future World is dedicated to the impact the future will have on humanity. Avenir Next also is connected to Walt Disney World as it serves as their typeface for both web and mobile sites. In time for EPCOT Center’s 35th anniversary, this specimen will focus on the original attractions that existed during the early years of EPCOT.

The repeated motif of angular lines and corners is alluding to the graphics of early Epcot memorabilia and objects. Shown throughout the book are recreations of the classic icons used in Epcot Center until around the 1990's and now present on retro merchandise. The theme of each pavillion allowed me to play with the type on each page and demonstrate it's different styles and uses. For example, the Land page uses alignment to create a vine-like movement of the text; the Horizons page uses text size to create a sensation of the text fading into a horizon of space; the Imagination page uses rounded text for a more playful look and feel. The dominant use of black was used both to build a futuristic design and help the bright colors pop off the page.
