ISTD 2012 - IT HAPPENED ON THIS DAY

The aim of the brief is to best interpret the project theme; ‘It Happened on This Day’ the day can reflect any day throughout time. The day I selected, as I felt it was most appropriate for the timing of the brief is; April Fools Day.I did thorough research and explored the historical, as well as present day information on the subject. I discovered a great amount of stories that reflect humorous antics and behaviour, in the form of pranks, hoaxes and real-life events. Reading the many humorous events that took place on April Fools Day, made me feel as though I was the spectator of an outrageous and hysterical performance. Therefore, I created the concept of Performance. The medium that I felt would be suitable for my concept was a small magazine with little snippets of stories that I found to be humorous. I wanted to target young adults aged between the ages of 20 and 30. Therefore, I designed a vibrant and edgy cover that would fit the idea of a performance, perhaps in a Circus, as well as appeal to my target market. The layout of the ‘pocket mag’ is clean but has small images throughout, to allow the readers to visualise the stories, which in turn makes it more entertaining. I also, used the idea of presenting my information as a play or circus would – starting with; the opening act which represents traditions, the main event which represents hoaxes and the grand finale which represents real events and ultimately ending with a bang.I wanted the typography for my booklet to be simple and clean, as I felt it might clash with my illustrations.Furthermore, it gives the booklet a modern edge to ‘old-school’ circus act typography. The typography I used throughout my booklet was Century Gothic.
