Week 7 - Light and Scale

Light and Scale
1. Scale

Technique - Photography
Process - Shutter speed 1/250. Aperture f/8. ISO 100. I set the dinosaur up to seem like he is drinking from this huge can, and shot the image from the ground level to ensure I captured this scale difference. I have added a filter to enhance the image's colours slightly. No other tweaking has been done to the photo as I liked it as it was.
Reasoning - I shot this particular image during my tutorial time. We were given small figurines, dinosaurs and the like to play around with scale.  I found this empty beer can in the garden and thought I could really use this to experiment with scale.
Reflection - I found that trying to find places to shot around university with the same small figurines was a bit repetitive so I would like to experiment with other landscapes and alternate scale items.

2. Light

Technique - Photography
Process - Shutter speed 1/4000. Aperture f/5.6. ISO 800. I had to wait until the time of the day when the sun streamed into my apartment the most as I knew I would get the strongest light at this time. I set the plant onto a table in front of a window and basically found the best angle (also without my shadow) and shot the image. I have also added a filter to enhance the image's colours.
Reasoning - Shadows go hand in hand with light which is why I wanted to capture both at once. I think the angle of the shadow makes the plant look bigger than it actually is which creates an interesting, elongated effect.
Reflection - Overall, I am really happy with how this image came out. The shadows within the image really add to the image's depth. As the plant is in full sun the fuzziness on the plant is accentuated and the orange tips are really quite bold. In this case, I think I have captured light + shade well.
3. Light

Technique - Photography
Process - Firstly, I changed the settings on my camera to a shutter speed of 8'', Aperture f/22 and ISO 100 to ensure I could capture the long length of light. I set the timer on my camera to 10 seconds so I could get myself ready. Once the shutter started I began to wave my camera flash around in random position to get this long scribble of light. I added a white cast filter as I thought it enhances the light in the image.
Reasoning - I wanted to explore different light possibilities and a light trail in particular was one that I was extremely excited to try.
Reflection - I like how this photo came out. As I am only beginning to explore this possible photographic field it is not as sharp as I would want it to be but I will continue to practice, testing out different shutter speeds and with alternate light sources.

4. Scale

Technique - Photography
Process - I found these dancing figurines and set them up in circle. I used a light to ensure the figurines were well visible. I then took the shot with camera's settings on; shutter speed 1/4000, Aperture f/2 and ISO 1600. I added a VSCO filter and lightened the image in Photoshop.
Reasoning - I had only stumbled across these figurines and thought they would demonstrate scale perfectly. I also thought that their particular dance positions created interest for the image and added a little humour.
Reflection - The photo turned out like I wanted it to. I like how the dancers are in a dance circle and the light adds to this mood.
5. Light

Technique - Photography
Process - I stood on a bridge overlooking a highway and leant my camera on the rails. I set the camera to the settings; shutter speed 5'', Aperture f/6.3 and ISO 100. I have added a filter to enhance the image's colours as I was undecided to what I wanted to do in terms of fixing the colour. I also lowered the exposure as the image was just slightly too light, and increase the contrast marginally.
Reasoning - I love the head/tail light trail images that you find on the internet and it was always something that I wanted to try myself. I thought that this particular image style really explores a different way to shoot lights which is relevant to this weeks brief.
Reflection - I liked this image came out, however this particular light trail method is a skill that I would like to work on to improve in the future. I definitely should have set my shutter speed to a slower speed as there are breaks in the trails. Also, I need to choose a place that is fairly dark so the head/tail lights are enhanced. Finally, I should have chosen a different, busier highway possibly to have more light trails in the image.
