Underneath Us: Saami Project

"It is true, we don't always wear our Saami traditional costumes. However, that does not make us less Saami. Our culture is underneath here (points the heart): Underneath Us"

Anni Guttorm and Sara Wesslin, saami girls, are professional in their fields. Anni works for the Siida Museum in Inari and during the weekends she performances as a leading singer in her band. In the other side, Sara is a journalist for a newspaper in Finland. During our conversations, we discuss about how the old version of Saami culture has got stuck in books and museums. But what about the Saami people of today? How has this amazing culture changed? They show us how they live their days today: just like anybody else. They also explain that even they were born in a develop country, there are still social stigmas in Finnish society. Therefore, the unbelievable lack of information about Saami Culture in Finnish education creates, till today, discrimination challenges.
