Uzi Ben-Ami, Ph.D.'s profile

A Book for Children with Learning Disabilities

With over 30 years of experience as a psychologist, Uzi Ben-Ami, Ph.D., has a private practice in Maryland where he works with parents, children, families, and groups. In 1996, Uzi Ben-Ami, Ph.D., published the book Many Ways to Learn: A Kid’s Guide to LD (learning disabilities) with Judy Stern.

The National Institutes of Health suggests that 15 percent of the US population may have a learning disability. Young people with dyslexia, ADHD, and other relevant issues are no less intelligent than other children but may have more difficulty with tasks like reading, math or memory. Alternative learning modalities may work better for these youth and help them stay on track in their class.

The book, Many Ways to Learn which is aimed at children aged 9 to 14 with learning disabilities, uses the central metaphor of climbing a mountain. Getting to the top is possible with the right tools, when focusing on both challenges and strengths and with the motivation to use available supports. The book lays out tips and information to help both kids and parents understand the child's challenges and what sorts of support will help them climb their mountain.

When children realize the book is easy to understand, oriented towards their issues, well illustrated, they feel supported in dealing with their daily issues. The skills they learn increase their motivation to study, and empower them to feel capable of managing their challenges, and advocating for themselves.
