Warring Goddesses: Freyja

Daemen College Senior Thesis: Warring Goddesses
Frejya, Norse goddess of war

Mixed media, Late 2016

"This body of work exhibits goddesses of war in active and engaging poses. This purposely gives them the power that seems to have been taken from them in pictorial representations. They are also portrayed in a way that resonates with their original designs and or verbal descriptions by the cultures they have come. This form stabilizes the connection with the culture and the women they created. The continuation of portraying the goddesses/ powerful mythical women in the current day in age is important. I believe that if these women were not even spoken of in the first place, there would be no question in having a completely male dominated society. The purpose of depicting these goddesses of war is because little art of them in their associated texts exists. Gods and other masculine deities are great powerful creatures that writers and artists made them out to be, but none of the women or feminine deities of the same caliber. If artwork of the female deities is created, they are shown not as powerful or in a sexual pose. They should be given the depiction they deserve. These deities represent power and authority. Due to this non-existence, it alludes to the suppression of the feminine authority. I created this series as a call to my personal beliefs that more ancient feminine influences should be brought to light."
