Seen and Unseen is a book I have created for young audience aged 8-14 years based on pictures and world facts. Picture books represent a unique literary form that blends stories with art. In a picture book, the illustrations are as important as the text, and both work together to tell the story. I believe children should be educated geographical knowledge and facts about the world from young age and I think seen and unseen gives out all the relevant information for the children to know.
Picture books help young children understand that words convey meaning, well before they are aware of the text. Pictures can help increase vocabulary, an important building block for reading. Books can help young children identify colours, shapes, numbers, and letters, as well as names of people, places, animals, and everyday objects. My book has characters and places which are easily identified by the young children but to keep it interesting for the adults it also has facts and numerical data about the world such as the mass of the world, population and water resources and etc.
To briefly explain the theme of my book, It is based about a fictional Alien character which comes to the world to explore the places. Each page contains digital illustrations of the alien exploring the places on earth. Each page also contains short facts about the places the alien has visited.
Pictures enable children to explore the world within their own imagination by making connections with the characters and events they see in the books. when the parents explain the facts on each page to the children they are helping children connect with characters and events and they make the book more real to them.
The choice of colours are grey toned pastel colours which are not very bright or dark but in the middle. As the audience is young children I made the design very colour full. Colours are an important part of learning for small children. When colour is used right in children’s books, it draws them into the visual aspect of the various colours on the pages and helps provide stimulation for their developing minds.
My book is full of fun and excitement and each page contains relevant information for young kids to learn about the earth they are living in and I believe my designs have suited the target audience very well.
