Reflection.
This is the final project for Digital Illustration class. The theme that I chose for this project was "Rotten."
The initial idea for this piece was to make a zombie, but after making several sketches and brainstorming, I ended up with the idea of making a portrait of a person that is heartbroken, lost, with a "rotten" soul but still wants to show that he's ok. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and tried a new technique that I never used before: vector painting.
I started with sketching the portrait. It was inspired by the music video of Chet Faker " Talk is Cheap," and the colors were inspired by one of my favorite Japanese artists. After I had finished my sketch, I put in on the computer by using digital art board. Next was to use transparency and opacity to create layers and layers of colors and blend them together on Adobe Illustrator. First, was to make a base color for the face and neck, use a gradient to make base shadows. After, I make eyes and lips separately but using the same technique to blend the colors. At the end when I had all the pieces together, I put all the layers in one and add finishing touches like more shadows, more dimension for the face, add the gore licking from eyes to the mouth. I though if I will make blood and something disgusting it will look more like a zombie rather than a hidden "rotten" soul, so I made it look like candies. I saw the same thing on the works of XhXixart and was very impress with that idea. The final touch for this piece was to add flowers. The message that I wanted to give to people from my work was sometimes we feel so stress and down and literally "rotten" inside but still try to smile, to keep up wth life and show that we don't have any problems, that's why I thought roses would be a great thing to put in the background to bring that contrast.
I learned a lot from this project. It took me 19 hours on this piece and a lot of time to learn about vector painting and blending techniques on Illustrator. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something that is completely new to me.
