Shakespeare Play Posters
16" x 20"

A poster series promoting modern renditions of Shakespeare’s plays at the new B-Street Theatre on the Main Stage.
Objective:
To create a four-part promotional poster series with a strong system that details the location, time, date, and website for the modern renditions of these Shakespearean plays.
Solution:
While the most simplistic solution would have been to create the plays with only one systematic element, this poster series uses multiple elements and patterns in order to create a strong system. It uses illustration style, color, borders, type placement, theme, and numbers to build the system.

The illustration style is primarily clean. Each poster uses two colors as the palette in addition to black, and rotates between the four posters (two posters share a single color). The posters have a rectangular border that frames the action, and are broken up in unique ways. The type placement is consistent, with the website on the top, and the main information on the bottom left, with the illustration or graphical elements always thrusting toward the bottom left corner. The theme for each poster is based on emotions: Romeo & Juliet is romance, Hamlet is anger, The Tempest is isolation or loneliness, and Macbeth is fear. Each poster as a different number of people, Hamlet has zero, The Tempest has one, Romeo & Juliet has two, and Macbeth has three.

Combining multiple system elements to create a coherent set of posters was important to linking each design together, as well as for effectively generating interest in the series of performances.
