The Vika folding bicycle; a recent studio project. We were tasked with designing a vehicle for personal transportation as part of our Industrial Design 04 module. I decided on a folding electric bike for people who are new to a certain area, and for one reason or another, cannot depend on conventional means of transport to get to places.
Inspiration came from my dad's work colleagues who were placed in Germany for training. The offices there weren't too far away from their apartments but it was still a long walk. And since they were only there for a few months, it didn't make much sense to buy a car or apply for a driver's license. Additionally, there weren't any bus routes running through there, so they had no choice but to brave the elements on foot every day.
The Vika seeks to endow mobility to individuals like these: people who either by legislation or financial circumstances, cannot use conventional transportation.
But, whether you're a traveler on holiday, a university student starting life in a foreign country, or just someone who needs to commute in a bustling city; the Vika serves to make getting around a little easier.
