Aspects of me include American, Teenager, and ‘Honorary’ Asian (a given nickname). I painted people I knew who corresponded and labeled them with prominent stereotypes of these aspects. Barcodes are how one reads a product, and so this symbolizes
stereotypes as how we read people. They are imprinted on us, concealing our true identities. The freer, natural representation created by the watercolor contrasts with the linear barcodes. This conveys how real humans are incompatible with the set labels we create.
