Voices: My Creative Journey

VOICES: MY CREATIVE JOURNEY
By: Avery Harrison
Introduction

This project required me to look at my own artistic story, share what art means to me, and how I came to find it in my own way. I was challenged to explore my own life, and to find what influenced where I am now, and where I hope to be in the future. Through the use of Adobe Spark, I was able to capture my personal journey and express how I feel about art and creativity.
Materials

Hardware - MacBookPro, Iphone 5, IPad
Software - Illustrator Draw, Adobe Spark
Platforms -Creative Cloud, Behance
Creative Process

The audience my journey is intended for would be anyone between the ages of 10-25. The purpose of my story is to encourage young artists like myself, to seek out what makes them unique, and to believe in their own process, despite what people around them may be doing. This idea is important to me because it's been the motivation that I found as an individual that keeps me creating and trying new things. It's what makes me a good artist! After hearing my story, I want people to believe they can discover their own artistic ability amongst a world of great artists. What adds a twist to my story is that I initially made a decision to pursue something that satisfied one of my passions, yet compromised the other. I think a lot of people can relate to the feeling of uncertainty, and when it came down to it, I didn't give up on something I knew I loved.

In order to tell my story and get my message across most effectively, I used first person narration in a friendly and open-minded tone. I wanted my story to feel very casual, and approachable to people in a similar situation. I chose to incorporate both illustrations and images in my story, as I wanted to include some of my own drawing, as well as photos of childhood memories I make reference of. Using the 'Argyle' layout, and 'Paris 20s' music, I created a very light and upbeat mood to go with the visuals and narration of my story.

Story Outline/ Script

- I was surrounded by creativity growing up
- My earliest creative influence were Disney movies on VHS
- As I grew a little older I got into some writing and it was the first thing I felt really proud of
- Growing up watching my sister excel in art, I always felt as though that was her talent and that I needed to find my own
- With age, came the realization that I could be just as good at art, but in my own unique way
- I explored many different kinds of art and design such as fashion design, building/sculpting, and sketching.
- After working two years following High School, I was ready to go onto post-secondary an decided to do Early Childhood Education
- The realization of getting ready to commit to four years of something that wasn't art, forced me to change my mind
- I decided to apply for the Art and Design Foundations program and continue exploring art
- The constant encouragement of my family and friends inspires me to keep creating and work towards my career goals
- My interests with both children and art have led me to great opportunities
- Art for me, comes from passion that is free-flowing and unhindered
- My time at GBC has challenged me to go beyond my creative comfort zone
- I hope to be in teachers college in the near future
- One of the greatest lessons I've learned is to enjoy the process and that's how you succeed

Storyboard
Production Methods and Worflow
My first step in making my creative journey come to life was to create illustrations using Adobe Draw on an IPad.
My next step was to send my illustrations to the Adobe cloud as pdf's from the IPad.
The third step was to begin creating the video on Adobe Spark. I chose to create a 'Make Up My Own' style video, as I felt the freedom and lack of structure would give me the most freedom.
Next thing was to grab my illustrations from the Cloud to add them to the video. I also uploaded my other photos to the video.
Next, I recorded my audio for each slide.
Finally it was time to add the final stylistic touches to my video.
Conclusion

In conclusion, I'm generally satisfied with the outcome of My Creative Journey. It was valuable to me to be experimenting with software that was unfamiliar and I ended up with a video that successfully expressed my story and my creative influences. In retrospect, I would've liked to have spent more time using only illustrations on the IPad as opposed to a mix of drawings and photos. Overall, this project was a great way to learn about the great software available and also a bit more about my own creative journey!
