In the fall of 2016, the Gordon College Department of Theatre Arts workshopped The Confession, an upcoming Broadway show. I had the privilege of designing the poster for the Gordon workshop.
The writer wanted a simple poster design that centered around one of the main elements of the show: a tree with a swing in it, the Amish countryside, New York City, or a finch. These are my initial sketches.
One thing we had to take into consideration was the name. "The Confession" could quickly turn into a serious drama— potentially even a horror movie— overturning the fact that this show is a musical comedy. I had to keep this in mind while I was designing, being intentional about bringing a bright, idyllic feeling to the poster.
I wanted to harken back to old lithograph prints with this poster. This is the initial line work.
The final poster came down to two designs: one with a frame and one without.
We ended up going with the framed design.
Special thanks to Jeff Miller and Myriam Cyr for letting me work on this project.
