VOICES, My Creative Journey

"Broken Bones Make You Stronger"

INTRODUCTION:

The objective of this assignment was to create a visual story with a personal narrative that illustrated the experiences that have brought us to where we are and who we are today. Then showcase our process work on Behance through screenshots and pictures of rough work/ thumbnails. The moral of our stories revolve around how each individual has adapted and been inspired by the topic of art. Personally, the structure of my story begins with a introduction, then I begin to reminisce into my childhood, my present, my future aspirations and then a conclusion. In my story, I heavily illustrate on my past and early childhood because I began my creative journey a young age in a non-traditional way. It was because of a skateboarding accident that initiated my passion for illustration and art in general and to find out the rest of my story, please watch my story!

Hardware: iPad, MacPro
Software: Illustrator Draw; Illustrator CC, Photoshop

CREATIVE PROCESS:

The intended audience for this specific project is mainly for my class peers and professors at George Brown College, specifically in the Art and Design program. The tone of narrative is set at a age appropriate, humorous and lively for all mature students to enjoy. The inspiration for my story was to illustrate the key factors of my life through past, present, and future that lead me here today. The most important aspect of this project is that my audience finds my story intriguing so that they are compelled to watch from start to finish. I plan to construct the script in third person because I personally find that perspective more appealing as a viewer because it allows the to re-live the story with you instead of just watching. In terms of making visual documentation, I plan to illustrate through a mixture of photography and illustrations but the majority of the story will be hand drawn. I would like to incorporate actual images from my life, specifically artwork to enhance the story's accuracy. I plan to my make my story a success be creating and illustrating a relatable storyline. The mood will be a combination of excitement and disappointment. I want to illustration several events in my life where I have failed, which lead to growth and where failure lead me to more failure. I want to establish a relationship with the viewer on a level where they can relate to my poor endeavour so that the story becomes gradually more intriguing.

The story will begin of illustrations of a young of myself and how I art was established into my life. Actually, ever since kindergarten I have always loved Art and at this age, "Art" was very generic term that would range from painting with our fingers to making self portraits out of dried pasta -- but I loved it all! But, the first artistic accomplishment was even before I started kindergarten. When I was in preschool, I had encounters a skateboarding accident outside my house which lead to the breakage of my left leg. Then resulted the doctors wrapping me up in a pink cast that covered my leg from hip to top and had the joyous adventure of rolling around in a hot pink wheelchair for what felt like years, but was only a couple months. And with a broken leg, I had a lot of spare tim, and it wasn't until the day my mother came home with a sketchbook and markers that my interest for art began. I would draw all day until I ran out of papers in my sketchbook and eventually I began to draw on my cast. It was like having my very own carry-on cast!  By the time my cast was removed I had covered every square inch of it in my drawings. Thinking back, breaking my leg on a skateboard is what established my passion for fine arts.

I look back now and realize that I had a heavy influence on interior design and architectural projects because a lot of my childhood was spent under house renovations. Therefore when it came to art projects art school that entailed any relativity in that subject matter, I would strive for success. My parents were constantly involved in house building and selling projects and I always surrounded by this kind of environment, and I heavily enjoyed it.

Presently, I am studying at George Brown College in the Art and Design Foundation program. I have always been heavily emerged in the art and its culture with my friends, family, and community. What I discover this year, is that I have a very keen interest in the field of interior design and without taking this specific program I would have never come to the realization. My interest sparked in my drawing class when we began working with the illustration of one-point perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed working with 3D spaces and then we briefly worked again with perspective in my Digital Media class. I enjoyed it because I could easily work with space and colour and had the freedom to design a colour story. And the I began to look back on my childhood and realized that I had a heavy influence on interior design and architectural projects my whole life because my parents constantly spent time doing house renovations/house stagings. Now, I have happily sent all my portfolios to schools next year that offer an BA in interior design.

Within the next five years, I hope to be finishing and/or finished a degree program in interior design and become a certified interior designer. What this program has taught me at George Brown College is creativity does not have limitations. All the professors were very welcoming any forms or artwork which initially boosted my self-confidence as an artist. The advice I would give to one entering Art and Design Foundations program is to always be efficient and constructive with your time and learn how to be comfortable asking your professor any silly question. A lot of the courses in this program were all new aspects of art that I had never learned in high school, therefore I struggled at the beginning until I learned that asking endless questions were always welcomed.

Story Outline/Script:

-The story begins with an introduction of my name and the purpose of my story ("And this is the story of how Faythe meets Art")
-It all began when I was only four years old and was skateboarding outside with the neighbourhood kids and broke my leg after trying to impress my peers ever so
-I went the hospital and the doctors wrapped me up in a hoy pink cast from head to toe ("which made me really cool again and could ride around in a matching pink wheelchair")
-Eventually, I became really bored and did not know what to do what my spare time
- Then my mother came home with my very first sketchbook book and fresh pair of markers to go with. I began to draw so much that eventually I ran out of paper. Then I began to draw on my cast ("And that is how Faythe meets Art for the very first time"
-Fast forwarding to the present, I am now at college studying in a general art program that helps me establish a portfolio
-In this program, I discovered a keen interest for interior design
-Now I have made a portfolio and applied to BA programs in interior design come next year
-My aspiration within the next 10 year would to be a certified interior designer

PRODUCTION METHODS & WORKFLOW:
step one...
Answering all the questions from 'My Creative Journey Template' to generate a foundation of a tone, storyline, script. Initially, I started this assignment without referencing the template, and the story lacked a climax point. After viewing all of the given questions, the structure of my story was more eventful.
step two...
Then I created a brief outline of my timeline and the key factors I wanted to portray in my story.
step three...
In Adobe Draw, I began to create my slides.
step four...
After completing all the illustrated slides, I then began to upload them into Adobe Spark in sequential order.
step five...
Then, I began to record the narrative portion to make the story come to life.
CONCLUSION:

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this project despite the challenges that occurred along the way. After hearing the brief of the assignment, I knew that it would be a lot of hard work but the idea of the creative process was very intriguing. In the previous assignments, I really enjoyed using Adobe Draw because it allows the more artistic type to create more freely opposed to those who are more experienced with the initial softwares (i.e. Photoshop and Illustrator). After the experience character development with the Caricature project and Cameo illustrations I was eager and felt fairly confident with this next project. My first initial challenge I had was uploading all the illustrations/slide onto Adobe Spark because my desktop version of the Creative Cloud would not recognized my files. Therefore, it made the process of creating my slideshow twice as long as it should of been. But my biggest problem started when I needed to begin recording my story. I found this part of the assignment the most vulnerable part because it forces you to publicly display your story not only though images but your own narration as well. I chose to record in third-person perspective because I found it more comfortable way to narrate my story. If I was to do this assignment again I would found a location that projected my narration more clearly and I wish that I had spent more time making illustrations of my life in present day. But all together, I am quite happy with the end results because I have never created an animation like this before and I think my story is strong and clear to follow with clear imaging.
