Geometric Pattern Tea Box
Closed tea box. I like specially the finger joints on the edges and how they contrast with the surfaces,
In 2010, my Grandpa passed away, and my Grandma was very sad about it, as all of us, but after 62 years of marriage, things looked uncertain for her. That Christmas, I decided to make her a special present as a reminder for everything they had built together: Our family. So inspired by that, I designed a black MDF tea box with an intricate pattern on the surface with three layers of triangles, as a gift for her. One Layer for each generation of our family made possible by their love.
The idea was to made a single tea box for her, as she and Grandpa enjoyed a lot of talks over tea time, a chilean tradition, that in time all of our family took part in it. After six years, I decided to bring back the project and re-designed together with Luis León, a young and talented designer as a wish to make my grandparents proud and share their story.
A sneak peek on the inside.
Luis took the design and made it his own, making all the pieces for assembly completely balanced and more like a product and less than a handcraft. The pattern on the top remained the same, but the all around design took form at its best with the skills of Luis.
By laser cut machine, we achieved the extreme precision on every part of the box.
Three layered triangle pattern on the surface
The box is suitable for 60 teabags, and we are thinking about making bigger versions of it soon.
The exterior is completely made with very thin pinewood, an interesting experiment with the table saw and the wood planer.
Thank you.
