One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest
Shortlisted cover design for the Penguin Design Awards
This is my shortlisted entry of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, for the Penguin Design Awards.
The design of the book cover was mainly influenced by chief Bromden’s mechanical portrayal of the world around him; he describes everything as if it were machinery. Nurse Ratched, being the oppressive force at the institute, is portrayed as a robot eating patients and processing them into mindless regimental robots; that conform to the nurse’s rule. The style has been inspired by Polish books from the 70’s and 80’s; I wanted to incorporate the use of colours, typography and bold simple graphics to capture a retro feel.
